Whether you’re a trend enthusiast, on top of all the latest buzz when it comes to wedding inspiration, or whether you want to rock something completely off the beaten path, it’s still fun to see what people are choosing to embrace for their special day and it’s a great way to get ideas. With that in mind, here are some of the top wedding trends for 2018 that I predict we’ll be seeing more of. Food trucks and forest bouquets? I’m all for it!

Embracing non-conventional food

In what is probably the most delicious trend on the list, I predict we’ll be seeing even more of a variety when it comes to serving options. I’m never one to turn down a three-course meal, but guys and gals are starting to embrace a less formal, more quirky dinner aesthetic. Think food trucks and cuisines that inspire sharing; like elaborate taco platters or Argentinian barbecues. Also, I predict that the mini donut trend will remain a strong contender for dessert domination.

Translucent spaces

I think the trend for light and airy venues will also continue, like greenhouses or spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows and delicate features. Not only do these create a minimalist, Scandi-vibe, but natural light is such an asset at weddings. It helps illuminate colours and gives delicate bridal accessories an ethereal look, which just adds that little extra something. Bonus: greenhouse-style venues are great for iffy weather dates, as you’re protected from the rain but still get the feeling of being outside.

Geometric shapes

Dare we blame Umbra for the geometric craze? This trendy, modern detail has been popping up everywhere, from wall planters to candle holders and now I’m seeing it the wedding accessory sphere as well. It’s a minimalist detail that looks equally great surrounded by a wealth of woodsy greenery or in a more industrial setting. These shapes are especially striking when they’re grouped together, such as a series of vases or a collection of candle holders.

Marble and copper

I’m seeing these materials incorporated a lot more often into wedding colour schemes and displays. Marble adds a nice luxe touch and it’s subtle enough that you can make it the primary aspect of your colour scheme, or just use it as an accent. Marble: it’s not just for your kitchen counters anymore! Copper is really beginning to make an impact too, moving in on its sister metallics, silver and gold. It’s a versatile material that can look equally at home in more rustic settings as it can in a more contemporary or minimalist design.

Woodland and forest-Inspired:

Since I call the pacific northwest home, I totally get this one! The “rustic” vibe that’s been popular in recent years is getting a bit of a west coast twist. Think fragrant spruce and cedar boughs, driftwood accessories and fairy lights. People are even starting to embrace the idea of having their ceremonies and sit-down dinners in forest-like settings, which looks amazing.

Rich, dramatic tones

I see the always classic black taking a bit of a backseat in 2018 to more jewel-inspired tones, which are still formal but have a dramatic, modern twist. Dark blue, in particular, is making a comeback and I’m all for it. This can range from sapphire, which as an accent is really elegant and exquisite, to a midnight blue, which is almost indistinguishable from a true black unless you’re under a certain kind of light. It’s deep, rich and sophisticated, but gives a contemporary feel that I love. As a wedding planner in Vancouver, I love seeing people’s interpretations of wedding trends and how people incorporate their own personal and cultural values into wedding plans.
